Are you dealing with a forced-air furnace issue in the middle of winter? Below zero temperature, ridiculous wind chills, and it happens to you at 8:00 pm at night...
In this blog post, I am going to go through some simple steps to make sure your furnace is functioning properly.
1) Check to Make Sure the Air Intake is Not Blocked
This is as simple as walking to the exterior of your home and making sure the white PVC pipe sticking out 2-3 feet from the ground is not blocked with snow or something else. A furnace needs fresh air to continue running otherwise it will automatically turn off.
2) Make Sure the Switch is On
On most modern-day furnaces they are required to have an on/off switch installed to be able to disconnect the furnace in case of an emergency. Make sure the switch is in the on position so you don't waste $80 on a service call for a perfectly good furnace.
3) Make Sure the Filter is Clean
Tenants and owners forget to change their furnace filter & normally furnaces will turn off if the filter becomes plugged. My recommendation would be changing the filter every 2-3 months to make sure it is clean and operating at peak performance.
4) Condensation Line is Draining Properly
Most furnaces have a condensation line that runs to a floor drain of some sort. If your furnace has a condensation line that is being crushed or not working, you will want to remove the items that are obstructing that.
